An opportunity for on the job training alongside a fully funded degree course at university

From the earliest years of Barnes Construction, we have been a proud investor in our Management Trainee Programme. Over 80 individuals have begun their careers in the construction industry through the Programme and graduates make up over half of our management staff, including 3 of our 5 Directors.

There is a huge variety of managerial roles in construction, office or site based, technical or commercial. Trainees will spend a period of time in each of the different departments of the business, including Estimating, Design Management, Planning, Bid Management, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, and Site Management.

In each department, the Management Trainee will work with a training mentor who will explain and demonstrate all elements of the different disciplines. Our mentors have usually come through the training scheme themselves, and so they have a complete understanding from a trainees perspective.

On completion of the scheme, the Management Trainee will progress to the next tier of management in a role within one of our departments. It normally takes around four years to complete the training scheme.

Required skills, qualification and experience:
We are looking for ambitious applicants who have strong GCSE results and either have or expect to achieve good A level results or equivalent vocational qualifications.

Applicants do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience of the construction industry.

“Being able to try different departments within the business is a huge benefit of the Management Trainee scheme. I’m currently in Contracts Management, which I am enjoying. I appreciate physically seeing the methods used on site and being able to see the projects in person gives me a much better understanding of construction.

"The support from Barnes has been great. I felt welcomed from the first day and could not have asked for a better start. I have learnt a lot in such a short period of time, both from college and the job. I would recommend the Management Trainee Scheme to anyone”

“There are multiple benefits to the Management trainee scheme, but the biggest one for me is the fact that I can implement my work in the office and on site into my studies. This really helps with assignments as you are seeing things as they are first-hand, which is the best way to learn in my opinion."

"I am currently working in Quantity Surveying. It is exciting to be able to work in all areas of the business to understand which parts I enjoy. I am most looking forward to choosing my future specialism."

Barnes Construction have been great with support, if I do not understand something there will be multiple people around me willing to help. They have given me the opportunity to go to Uni as part of this scheme and I am delighted to be a part of the business."

"I would 100% recommend this scheme to others”.

Entries for the intake of our Management Trainee Scheme will open for applications from Easter and September, and further information will be displayed on our vacancies page at that time.
